Local CEO Selected As “100 Men Impacting Supplier Diversity” By Minority Business News USA
The Rocky Mountain Minority Supplier Development Council (RMMSDC) President/CEO Greg Lopez, was showcased in Minority Business News USA magazine in a distinguished list highlighting key men advocates, and their companies, who influence diversity practices in corporate America. Honorees and their corporations were selected based on their continued presence in the supplier diversity arena, with particular focus on efforts over the last year. The honorees selected in this distinct group are men whose stellar diversity initiatives have gone above and beyond.
Since taking the leadership positions of the RMMSDC this January, Lopez and three others have hosted a number of successful events geared towards providing valuable information concerning programs, business opportunities, regulations, and other policies that impact minority business enterprises. The RMMSDC serves Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and New Mexico, and currently consists of 100 corporate members, including CH2MHill, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Qwest, UPS and Xcel Energy.
Mayor Wellington Webb Signs On With Fulcrum Publishing To Write Autobiography
Fulcrum Publishing announced that former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb has signed an agreement to publish his autobiography, tentatively titled Wellington Webb: The Man, The Mayor, and the Making of Modern Denver. The book shares his inspirational story as Denver’s first African American mayor and relates previously untold stories about growing up in a troubled family, struggling as a high school student, and the death of his young daughter. Webb reveals behind-the-scene details of his 1991 underdog bid for mayor, his difficult first term (including the opening of Denver International Airport), his brutal reelection in 1995, and how he managed several unforeseen crises. His 12 years in office, ending in 2003, allowed him to make monumental improvements to the Mile High City, including the revitalization of downtown Denver and the addition of more park space than any other mayor in history.
The autobiography was cowritten with former Denver Post reporter Cindy Brovsky and includes more than 60 interviews with Webb’s longtime friends, former colleagues, community leaders, and Colorado and national politicians. The book is scheduled for release in February 2007, in conjunction with Black History Month.
Kaiser Permanente Names Jandel Allen-Davis, MD, Associate Medical Director Of External Relations
Kaiser Permanente has named a new associate medical director to lead the Colorado region’s External Relations program. Jandel Allen-Davis, MD, brings more than 16 years of leadership experience to Kaiser Permanente, including 12 years as a member of the Colorado Permanente Medical Group (CPMG), during which time she was selected as physician in charge of the Wheat Ridge Medical Offices and chair of the CPMG Board of Directors. In addition to managing a busy obstetrics and gynecology practice, Dr. Allen-Davis serves on the Colorado State Board of Medical Examiners and the Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital Medical Executive Committee. As associate medical director of external relations, Dr. Allen-Davis will be charged with helping the community to better understand the value and ethics of Kaiser Permanente care. Dr. Allen-Davis will maintain a limited clinical practice when assumes her post as associate medical director this month, replacing William Wright, MD, who is now Kaiser Permanente Colorado’s associate medical director of Market and Networks.
Denver Takes Top Spots In National Video Awards
Coverage of Denver City Council meetings and an engaging Recycling Public Service Announcement featuring Mayor Hickenlooper topped a stellar night for the City of Denver's
municipal access channel Denver 8 TV at a national awards event on August 25. Denver 8 TV captured seven top tier awards, including the two above first place awards, in a national competition sponsored by the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA) held this year at Disney World. Denver 8 TV was nominated for a total of ten awards in the Government Programming Awards (GPA), presented by the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisers. Denver 8 TV took the top award in the Public Meeting Coverage category for its work with Denver City Council and with the PSA spot that focused on the City’s recycling campaign. Three other Denver programs were picked for second place and the Event Coverage ranked among the top three among the nation’s best video productions. Three other programs received honorable mention. Denver 8 TV led a well-represented group of Colorado communities that included many cities in the metro area, including Arvada, Aurora, Broomfield, Castle Rock and Lakewood.
Mayor Hickenlooper Appoints Four New Leaders To The Denver Commission On Cultural Affairs
Mayor John Hickenlooper recently appointed four new leaders to the Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs: Arturo Gómez, Giovanni Greco, Ken Santistevan, and Howard Torgove. Gómez is the Music Director for jazz89 KUVO FM radio station and the recipient of the Music Director of the Year Award for the past three consecutive years from JazzWeek magazine. Gómez is a passionate lover of music and an advocate for multiculturalism. Greco is the president of The Wildlife Experience, an organization focused on engaging Coloradoans through hands-on exhibits, film and fine art to achieve a realistic understanding of wildlife and their habitats. Prior to joining The Wildlife Experience, he was Chief Operating Officer of CollegeInvest’s multi-billion dollar college savings program. Santistevan is the Director of Public Affairs for the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA). His position at the DCPA includes community relations, government affairs, arts and education policy/advocacy and the promotion of careers in the arts. Torgove is currently a Managing Partner in The Wellshire Inn, the financial advisor and participating lender to the expanding Purple Martini Company. He has served as the Colorado Representative to the President’s Advisory Committee on the Arts, and is a founding member of the Director’s Society for the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.
The Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs acts as an advisory board to the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs. The Commission is comprised of dynamic and accomplished Denver leaders in the areas of the arts, business and education, all of whom are appointed by the Mayor. The Commissioners are strong advocates of the arts and culture and are committed to the mission and goals of the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs. Urban League Of Metropolitan Denver, Inc. Appoints New Interim Chair For Board Of Directors
The Urban League of Metropolitan Denver, Inc. (ULMD) has appointed Dr. Paul Martin, Senior Pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church in Denver, as the new Interim Board Chair. Dr. Martin will lead ULMD into a new era as they offer alternative educational options for children in grades kindergarten through twelve, as well as continuing to provide adult career development opportunities. Dr. Martin's church, Macedonia Baptist Church, is one of ULMD's nine Learning Center Sites that will host "at-risk" students who will learn through online curriculum combined with in-person mentor support.
As the Board Chair, Dr. Martin is also committed to strengthening the board's leadership and developing funds. Dr. Martin has served as Director Emeritus since 2004, and previously served as the League's Board Chair from 1998 through 2001. Dr. Martin is a recognized radio personality and is the creator and host of the radio program "Charisma," a weekly radio ministry on AM 810 KLDC in Denver. The Urban League of Metropolitan Denver, Inc. (ULMD), was founded in 1946, and is a nonprofit, community-based organization committed to helping African Americans and other individuals, regardless of gender, ethnic origin, or religious affiliation, in the areas of community advocacy and children education.
Denver Anchor/Reporter Tamara Banks Named News Director For Martini 101.5 FM
Tamara Banks has been named News Director for Martini 101.5 FM, one of Denver’s newest radio stations. Martini 101.5 FM is owned and operated by the Denver Radio Company, LLC. Banks is a well known face in the Denver media, most notably as a television News Anchor and Reporter for Denver’s WB2 News. Most recently she worked in Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper’s office as Neighborhood Liaison. Banks attended the University of Northern Colorado where she majored in mass media and journalism. After graduating she worked as an anchor and reporter for KRDO-TV (ABC) in Colorado Springs. Banks brings extensive radio experience with her to Martini 101.5 FM from her experience as a radio news reporter for stations in Denver, Dallas, Albuquerque and Greeley.
A longtime Denver resident, Banks has been very active in the Colorado Community. She is a past president of Colorado Association of Black Journalists and serves on the boards of the Colorado I Have a Dream Foundation, the Five Points Business Association, the Denver Art Museum’s African American Art Committee and the Metropolitan State College Visual Arts Center. Banks is also a former board member for the National Association of Black Journalists.
Denver Boys And Girls Club Member Wins National Photography Competition
Blanca Pasillas of Denver, 14, competed in ImageMakers, a Boys and Girls Club-wide contest and a regional competition sponsored by the Circuit City Foundation, where she advanced to the national level and placed first in the Alternative Process category. Boys & Girls Club members across the country submitted photography in four age divisions and five categories, including Color Process, Black and White Process, Alternative Pprocess, Digital and Photo essay. ImageMakers is part of a comprehensive initiative promoting young people’s creativity in the medium of photography as well as encouraging artistic skills and cultural enrichment. The national ImageMakers winners were chosen by a distinguished jury of professional photographers and received an all-expense-paid trip to Universal Orlando Resort. All winning photographs will be displayed in the ImageMakers National Photography Contest traveling exhibition, at BGCA’s special events throughout the year, and on the ImageMakers Web site, www.imagemakersbgca.org.
