Run for Life With Donor Dash
The annual Donor Dash, a 5K run/walk, will be held on July 16 at Washington Park to raise awareness for the need for organ and tissue donation and recognize organ and tissue donors and those who have received or are still waiting for transplants. Joint Art Show Opens
The Chicano Humanities Arts Council (CHAC) and the Sankofa Arts Collective will present a joint show of art featuring artists from both galleries. “Finding Common Ground” will showcase the art representing the Latino/Chicano and African American experience in Denver. The show opens June 28 and runs through July 15 at CHAC and through July 30 at Sankofa and the Blair Caldwell AARL. The show will be in three locations. CHAC is located at 772 Santa Fe Drive, the Blair Caldwell Library is at 2401 Welton St. and Sankofa’s Back Do’ Studio is at 3030 Downing. Events for this collaboration include:
- Opening reception, Friday, July 7 from 6 to10 p.m. at CHAC
- Cultural anthropologist Dr. Ella Maria Ray will present “Rooted in Culture,” Sat., July 15 at the Blair Caldwell AARL, at 1 p.m.
- Reception at Sankofa’s Back Do’ Studio, Sat., July 15 from 6 to10 p.m. featuring Ron Ivory performing live jazz and R&B
- A New Orleans Style Cooking Class at CHAC, Sat., July 22 at 1 p.m., featuring New Orleans artist and chef Robert Aquarius
CHAC gallery hours are Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Sankofa hours are Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. and by appointment. Blair Caldwell hours are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library is closed Sunday and Thursday.

Holy Redeemer's "Christmas in July" Arts And Craft Fair Opens
The Episcopal Church of the Holy Redeemer will be holding its annual "Christmas in July" Arts and Craft Fair on Sat., July 15 from10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2552 Williams St. in Denver. The fair will feature local artists specializing in jewelry, soap, scarves, glasswork, pottery, paintings, African style pillows and quilts, dolls, homemade food and more. The fee for a booth is $35 and sellers get to keep their profits. Items must be more than 50 percent handmade.

Six Women, Six Nobel Peace Prizes, International Stories of Courage
An unprecedented gathering of six women Nobel Peace Prize laureates will take stage, Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. This event is hosted by the City and County of Denver and is open to the public.
Helen Thorpe, wife of Mayor John Hickenlooper, along with Katherine Archuleta, Denver’s chief operating officer, and a committee of volunteers are the hosts for the evening. Swanee Hunt, former U.S. Ambassador to Austria and founder of The Initiative for Inclusive Security, is the mistress of ceremonies. This event will benefit PeaceJam.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureates include: Rigoberta Menchu Tum, awarded in 1992 for native Indian rights in Central America, Mairead Corrigan Maguire and Betty Williams, awarded in 1976 for grassroots movements to end violence in Northern Ireland, Jody Williams, awarded in 1997 for an international treaty to end land mines, Shirin Ebadi, awarded in 2003 for democracy, peace and women’s rights in the Middle East, and Wangari Maathai, awarded in 2004 for sustainable development, democracy and peace in Kenya.
Tickets are $100 for general admission and $150 for Gold Circle reserved seating. Tickets may be purchased by calling 303-455-2099. All proceeds from the event will support PeaceJam’s 10th Anniversary Conference, Sept.15 to17 at Denver University and will help 3,000 youth attend the conference.

Auditions For Experienced Voices And Musicians
Souls For Christ Gospel Choir is looking for experienced voices and musicians. All vocal parts are needed, as well as the following musicians: keyboards/piano, organ, bass guitar, drums, percussion and electric guitar. Good pitch and the ability to learn and retain parts are a must. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings and Saturday afternoons. All denominations are welcome. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Mayor to Speak at League of Women Voters
Mayor John Hickenlooper will be the keynote speaker at the Denver League of Women Voters Education Fund dinner on Wednesday, July 12 at The Brown Palace. The “Spirit of Denver” award will be presented to four recipients: former Mayor Wellington Webb and Wilma Webb, businessman Mark Imhoff and League member Maxine Kurtz. The League’s non-profit Education Fund will honor one graduating senior from each Denver high school with a $250 award and certificate. This award is the Charles Falkenberg Family Citizenship Award. The Visions of the City dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. The event opens with a social hour at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7. The awards ceremony and Mayor’s speech take place at 8.

Insider Classic To Support Hypertension Research
Springhill golf course will play host to the first annual Insider Classic to support high blood pressure (hypertension) research to be held at Springhill Golf Course in Aurora on July 29 at 7 a.m. Fees are $90 per golfer and include green fee, cart, range balls, barbecue lunch, buffet at 3Jacks, and a chance to win a weekend Las Vegas golf trip.

Help Bring ENGI To Life!
All residents of the Denver area ages five and above are encouraged to apply to be directly involved in bringing Tatsuo Miyajima’s most recent work ‘ENGI’ to life. This work is a major public art installation, commissioned by the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs’ Public Art Program, to be located in the Denver Art Museum’s new Frederic C. Hamilton Building. Eighty diverse members of the community will each be given a simple digital numeric device to adjust for the artist. Each participant will set the rate at which their device changes. The installed devices will be located throughout the main four-story atrium of the Museum’s new building. The 80 individual devices - and their rates as set by the residents of Denver - will become Miyajima’s ‘ENGI’
The devices will be set at a public lecture and workshop August 9 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Colorado Convention Center. All selected participants must attend this workshop. The completed ‘ENGI’ will be unveiled during the Frederic C. Hamilton Building opening. Help make this a truly public piece of art. Applications must be returned by July 7.

Epworth Opens Summer Talent Camp
Epworth United Methodist Church announces its first Summer Talent Camp to be held the week of July 10 through July 14, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to all participants. Epworth UMC is located at 1865 Bruce Randolph Ave. in Denver. This Summer’s line-up includes juggling, theatre, dance and African martial arts. Youth participants will have an opportunity to take part in the Murals for Peace Project sponsored in part by the United Nations. In addition, there will be performances and clinics by local artists, including a special appearance by the Denver Youth Orchestra. A $30 registration fee/donation is requested, but no child will be turned away.

American Cancer Society Announces Relay for Life
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life brings groups and individuals concerned about cancer together at Denver Manual High School for a 14-hour relay against cancer from 6 p.m. on July 28 to 8 a.m. on July 29. The Relay for Life is an overnight community celebration where individuals and teams camp out, barbeque, dance, and take turns walking around a track relay-style to raise funds to fight cancer. At nightfall, participants will light hundreds of luminaries around the track in a ceremony to honor cancer survivors as well as friends and family members lost to the disease.

The Sandra Phillips Gallery is honored to present internationally acclaimed photographer Carl Studna’s exhibit “Icons & Pop Culture” from Aug. 3 to Sept. 2 with an artist’s reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on August 3.
